Trigger points are tender nodules located in a taut band of muscle fibers that cause both localized and referred pain in tissues supplied by nerves. In their 2008 article, Trigger Points: Diagnosis and Management in The American Family Physician Journal, Dr.’s Alvarez and Rockwell defined trigger points as
discrete, focal, hyperirritable spots located in a taut band of skeletal muscle, which are painful on compression and can produce local and referred pain
Drs Travell and Simons, authors of The Trigger Point Manual, estimate that trigger points are the primary cause of pain over 75% of the time and are a factor in nearly all pain conditions.
Trigger point therapy involves the location and deactivation of these nodules using finger pressure. The therapy will likely involve multiples sessions. The triggers were developed over time and will take time to recover. Muscles that contain trigger points are often areas of chronic “holding”.
